About Oestrogel (Estradiol 0.06%) Gel 80g

Oestrogel Pump-Pack is a transdermal hormone replacement therapy containing estradiol 0.06% w/w. It is supplied as an 80g metered-dose pump canister delivering approximately 64 measured doses. Each actuation dispenses 1.25g of gel containing 750 micrograms (0.75mg) of estradiol.

Estradiol is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Oestrogel is prescribed by a doctor or independent prescriber, who will determine whether it is appropriate and at what dose.

Active ingredient

• Estradiol 0.06% w/w
• 750 micrograms estradiol per 1.25g actuation
• Also contains carbomer, trolamine, alcohol and purified water

Dosage

Dosage is determined by the prescriber. The usual starting dose is two actuations daily, delivering 1.5mg of estradiol. The prescriber may adjust this within a range of one to four actuations daily. Always follow the directions on your prescription label and in the Patient Information Leaflet.

People who have a uterus are normally prescribed a progestogen alongside oestrogen therapy to protect the endometrium. Your prescriber will advise on this.

How Oestrogel is applied

1. Prime the pump before first use as described in the Patient Information Leaflet.
2. Apply to clean, dry, intact skin on the arms, shoulders or thighs.
3. Spread thinly over a large area of skin — for example from wrist to shoulder.
4. Do not apply to the breasts or the vulval area.
5. Allow the gel to dry for at least five minutes before covering the area with clothing.
6. Wash your hands after application.

Avoid skin-to-skin contact with the application site until the gel has dried, to reduce the risk of transfer to another person. Do not wash the area or apply other products to it for at least one hour.

Warnings and precautions

The gel is alcohol-based and flammable. Keep away from naked flames and do not smoke until the gel has dried.

Oestrogel is not suitable for everyone. Your prescriber will consider your medical history before prescribing, including any history of breast or other oestrogen-dependent cancer, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, endometrial hyperplasia, blood clots or clotting disorders, arterial thromboembolic disease, liver disease or porphyria.

Tell your prescriber about all other medicines you take, including liver-enzyme-inducing medicines and any other hormone treatments.

Side effects

Side effects reported with Oestrogel include skin reactions at the application site, headache, breast tenderness, nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, changes in mood and breakthrough bleeding.

Seek medical advice promptly if you notice swelling, redness or pain in a leg, chest pain or breathlessness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or unexpected vaginal bleeding.

Storage

Store below 25°C. Keep the pump upright, out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack.
