About Videne Surgical Scrub

Videne Surgical Scrub is a licensed antiseptic skin cleanser containing iodinated povidone 7.5% w/w (equivalent to approximately 8.25 mg of iodine per ml). It has been granted a marketing authorisation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and is manufactured in the UK by Ecolab Ltd.

Solutions of iodinated povidone gradually release iodine, which acts against a broad range of bacteria, fungi and viruses. The formulation is detergent-based and contains added emollients, and the characteristic brown colour allows the treated area to be seen clearly during application.

What it is used for

Videne Surgical Scrub is a broad-spectrum antiseptic for topical use. It is indicated for:

  • Pre-operative hand disinfection by the surgical team
  • Disinfecting the site of incision prior to elective surgery

It is intended for use by healthcare professionals, or under their supervision, and is commonly held in veterinary practices, podiatry and chiropody clinics, minor-surgery rooms and other clinical settings.

Directions for use

Surgical hand disinfection

Wet the hands and forearms, apply Videne Surgical Scrub and scrub thoroughly, including the nails. Add a little water to develop a lather, then rinse off completely under running water.

Pre-operative skin preparation

The site of incision should be washed with Videne Surgical Scrub two or three times a day prior to the operation. Immediately before surgery, moisten the skin with water, apply Videne Surgical Scrub and rub it thoroughly into the area for several minutes. Use a sterile gauze swab to develop a lather, then rinse off with water.

Only water should be used to dilute Videne Surgical Scrub. There are no special recommendations for the amounts used in children or older people. Always follow the instructions in the package leaflet and your own site or facility protocol.

Do not use Videne Surgical Scrub

  • If you are sensitive to iodine or to any of the other ingredients listed below
  • For regular or prolonged periods if you have a thyroid condition, or if you are taking lithium
  • On newborn infants

Warnings and precautions

  • For external use only.
  • Do not use on large wounds or severe burns.
  • Iodine absorbed through intact or damaged skin may interfere with thyroid function tests. Tell your doctor you have been using this product if you are due to have thyroid tests or a thyroid scan.
  • Irrigate the treatment area to remove as much blood as possible before use.
  • Do not use alongside reducing agents, alkaloid salts, tannic acid, salicylic acid, silver, mercury or bismuth salts, taurolidine or hydrogen peroxide.
  • Dark discolouration can occur at treated areas if certain other antiseptics are used at the same time.
  • Speak to your pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or using any other skin disinfectant or wound treatment.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Videne Surgical Scrub can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Skin reactions may occur but are very rare, affecting fewer than 1 in 10,000 people. Absorption of iodine through intact or damaged skin may interfere with thyroid function.

Side effects can be reported directly via the Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a prescription for Videne Surgical Scrub?

No. Videne Surgical Scrub is a Pharmacy (P) medicine, which means it can be supplied without a prescription following a short check by a pharmacist.

What is the difference between Videne Surgical Scrub and Videne Antiseptic Solution?

idene Surgical Scrub is a detergent-based formulation containing povidone-iodine 7.5% w/w, designed to be lathered and rinsed off. Videne Antiseptic Solution is a different product with a different povidone-iodine concentration and is not a detergent scrub. Check which one your protocol specifies before ordering.

Can Videne Surgical Scrub be diluted?

Only water should be used to dilute Videne Surgical Scrub.

Can it be used on open wounds or burns?

It should not be used on large wounds or severe burns. Speak to a pharmacist or clinician if you are unsure whether it is suitable for a particular use.

Why does it stain the skin brown?

The brown colour comes from the iodine in the formulation. It allows the area that has been treated to be seen clearly, and it rinses away with water.

Can I use Videne Surgical Scrub if I have a thyroid condition?

It should not be used for regular or prolonged periods if you have a thyroid condition, or if you are taking lithium. Iodine absorbed through the skin may also interfere with thyroid function tests. Speak to your pharmacist first.

Is Videne Surgical Scrub suitable for veterinary use?

Videne Surgical Scrub holds a marketing authorisation as a human medicine. Veterinary practices should follow their own prescribing and protocol requirements when selecting a skin disinfectant.

How should it be stored?

Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light.
