About Videne Antiseptic Solution 10% w/w

Videne Antiseptic Solution is a licensed medicine containing iodinated povidone (povidone-iodine) 10% w/w, equivalent to 11mg of iodine per millilitre. It is an aqueous cutaneous solution, supplied here in a 200ml bottle. The marketing authorisation is held by Ecolab Ltd, Caerphilly.

Povidone-iodine gradually releases iodine, which acts against a broad range of bacteria, fungi and some viruses. Being water-based, it is used where alcohol-based or chlorhexidine-based preparations are not suitable.

What it is used for

Videne Antiseptic Solution has two licensed uses:

  • Once-only use — disinfection of intact external skin, or use as a mucosal antiseptic, for example before surgery, biopsies, injections, punctures, blood taking and bladder catheterisation.
  • Repeated, time-limited use — antiseptic treatment of wounds including decubitus and varicose ulcers, burns, and infected and superinfected dermatoses.

In a clinical setting it is applied by a doctor or nurse. It may also be used by a patient for the antiseptic treatment of wounds, superficial and limited burns and infected skin.

How to use

  • Apply undiluted to the area to be treated unless otherwise directed.
  • For antiseptic irrigation, washes and baths, or for use as a mucosal antiseptic, the solution can be diluted. Ordinary tap water is suitable for dilution; where isotonicity is required, physiological saline or Ringer’s solution can be used. Refer to the Summary of Product Characteristics for recommended dilutions, frequency and duration.
  • Where a wound is being treated, irrigate the area first to remove as much blood as possible — povidone-iodine interacts with protein and other organic material.
  • The solution is intended for single use.
  • Do not swallow.

Read the leaflet supplied with the bottle before use.

Who should not use it

Videne Antiseptic Solution must not be used:

  • In hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) or other manifest thyroid disease.
  • In dermatitis herpetiformis (Duhring’s disease).
  • Before or after radioiodine treatment, until that treatment has finished.
  • By anyone known to be sensitive to iodinated povidone or any of the other ingredients.

Warnings and precautions

  • Take care when applying to the oral cavity, because of the risk of aspiration and consequent respiratory complications.
  • Regular or prolonged use should be avoided in people with thyroid disorders. Where the solution is used for longer than five days, or over extensive areas such as more than 10% of the body surface, thyroid function should be checked afterwards.
  • In neonates and infants up to six months of age, use only after careful assessment and then only to an extremely limited extent. Accidental oral intake by a nursing infant must be avoided.
  • Use with care in elderly patients predisposed to hyperthyroidism, such as those with autonomous thyroid adenomas.
  • Povidone-iodine can leave a brown deposit. Baths should be cleaned immediately after use. Marks on textiles will usually wash out with warm water and soap; persistent marks can be treated with ammonia solution or sodium thiosulphate.

Side effects

Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions of the skin occur, including delayed contact allergy which may appear as itching, redness and small blisters. Skin irritation following pre-operative disinfection has also been reported rarely. Anaphylactic reactions are very rare. Long-term application to extensive areas of skin, wounds or burns can lead to appreciable iodine uptake, and iodine-induced hyperthyroidism can occur in predisposed patients.

A full list is given in the leaflet. Side effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.

Storage

Store as stated on the bottle and in the leaflet. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.

This Videne was on behalf of my wife, she has used it for many many years. The previous bottle ( 2 litres) has reached it’s expiry date so this is a replacement, she swears by Iodine.
