Buy Ferrous Fumarate 210mg Tablets Online
Ferrous Fumarate 210mg tablets provide your body with iron, an essential mineral needed to make healthy red blood cells. Iron is found naturally in foods such as red meat, spinach and pulses, and your body uses it to produce the red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body. When iron levels run low, the body produces fewer healthy red blood cells than normal — a condition known as iron deficiency anaemia. Ferrous fumarate is used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia by topping up the iron your body needs. Each tablet contains 210mg ferrous fumarate, equivalent to approximately 69mg of elemental iron. Pack of 84 film-coated tablets. Brands may vary.
What is ferrous fumarate used for?
Ferrous fumarate is a high-strength iron supplement used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia. It’s one of the standard oral iron salts used in the UK, alongside ferrous sulfate and ferrous gluconate, and contains a higher proportion of elemental iron by weight than gentler alternatives — making it a common choice when iron stores need building back up. If you’re unsure which type of iron supplement is right for you, our guide comparing ferrous sulfate vs ferrous gluconate explains the differences.
About iron and iron deficiency anaemia
Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. When the body’s iron stores are low, red blood cell production is affected — this is known as iron deficiency anaemia, and it can be confirmed with a simple blood test. If you think your iron may be low, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting a supplement, particularly if you’ve not taken iron before. You can read more in our guide on buying iron supplements over the counter.
Directions — how to take Ferrous Fumarate 210mg
Always take ferrous fumarate as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. The usual dose to treat iron deficiency anaemia is one tablet two to three times a day. To prevent anaemia, the usual dose is one tablet once or twice a day. Your healthcare professional may advise a different dose based on your needs.
- Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.
- Taking the tablets with or after food can help reduce stomach-related side effects.
- Avoid taking them at the same time as tea, coffee, milk or eggs, as these can reduce how well the iron is absorbed. Vitamin C (for example a glass of orange juice) can help absorption.
- Your healthcare provider will tell you how long to continue treatment. Iron is usually continued for a period after your levels return to normal, to rebuild your body’s iron stores. Do not take for longer than advised.
Side effects
Like all medicines, ferrous fumarate can cause side effects, though not everyone gets them. The most common are stomach-related and are often eased by taking the tablets with food. They can include:
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- Feeling or being sick (nausea)
- Heartburn or stomach discomfort
- Dark or black stools (this is harmless and expected with iron)
For a full list of side effects, read the patient information leaflet supplied with the product. Side effects can also be reported via the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Warnings and who should not take it
Do not take ferrous fumarate if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or if you have another form of anaemia not caused by iron deficiency, a condition that causes iron to build up in the body (such as haemochromatosis), or repeated blood transfusions. Speak to your pharmacist or doctor before taking it if you have a stomach or intestinal ulcer, ulcerative colitis, or another inflammatory bowel condition. Tell them about any other medicines you take, as iron can affect how some are absorbed. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy, ask for advice before taking this medicine — iron and folic acid are often needed together during pregnancy.
Important: iron tablets can be very dangerous, even fatal, if taken by a child. Keep out of the sight and reach of children at all times. If you visit another doctor or a hospital, tell them you are taking ferrous fumarate.
Storage
Store below 25°C in the original packaging to protect the tablets from light and moisture. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
