About Zivafert 5000 IU Injection

Zivafert 5000 IU is a powder and solvent for solution for injection. Each vial contains 5000 International Units of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), a gonadotrophin hormone purified from human urine.

Zivafert is a prescription-only medicine. It is prescribed and its use supervised by a doctor or fertility specialist. Live Well Nationwide dispenses it against a valid private prescription; we do not prescribe it and cannot supply it without a prescription.

What it is used for

hCG acts in the same way as luteinising hormone (LH). It is used under specialist supervision:

  • In women, to trigger final follicular maturation and ovulation following stimulation of follicular growth, including within assisted reproduction cycles, and for luteal phase support.
  • In men, in hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism, and in certain other conditions where a specialist considers it appropriate.

How it is given

The dose and timing are set by the prescriber and will be stated on your prescription. Zivafert is given by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection after the powder has been reconstituted with the supplied solvent. Each vial is for single use, and the solution should be used immediately after preparation.

Do not self-inject unless you have been trained to do so by your doctor or nurse. Follow the instructions you have been given and read the patient information leaflet supplied with the product.

Who should not be given Zivafert

Zivafert should not be given to anyone with:

  • A known or suspected hormone-dependent tumour, including cancer of the ovary, uterus or breast, or carcinoma of the prostate or male breast.
  • Vaginal bleeding of unknown cause.
  • Ovarian enlargement or an ovarian cyst not caused by polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • Active thromboembolic disorder.
  • Known hypersensitivity to human chorionic gonadotrophin or any of the excipients.

Tell your prescriber if you have any condition affecting the thyroid, adrenal glands or pituitary, uncontrolled organ disease, or a personal or family history of blood clots.

Warnings

Treatment with gonadotrophins carries a risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Contact your fertility clinic promptly if you develop marked abdominal pain or swelling, nausea or vomiting, breathlessness, or a sudden reduction in urine output.

There is an increased likelihood of multiple pregnancy with ovulation induction and assisted reproduction. There is also an increased risk of blood clots. In boys treated for delayed puberty, signs of early sexual development should be monitored by the prescriber.

hCG can interfere with pregnancy tests for up to ten days after the injection, which may give a false positive result.

Side effects

Reported effects include pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, tiredness and mood changes. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and allergic reactions are also recognised. A full list is given in the patient information leaflet.

Side effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.

Storage

Store as stated on the pack and in the patient information leaflet. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.

Ingredients

The active substance is human chorionic gonadotrophin, 5000 IU per vial. The powder contains lactose monohydrate. Refer to the patient information leaflet for the full list of excipients in the powder and solvent.
