About Treathay 120mg tablets

Each film-coated tablet contains 120mg of fexofenadine hydrochloride, equivalent to 112mg of fexofenadine. Fexofenadine is an antihistamine used to relieve the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hayfever.

Fexofenadine 120mg was reclassified so that it can be supplied from a pharmacy without a prescription. It was previously available on prescription only.

What Treathay is used for

Treathay relieves the symptoms of hayfever in adults and children aged 12 years and over, including sneezing, runny or blocked nose, and red, itchy or watery eyes.

How it works

When you come into contact with something you are allergic to, such as pollen, the body releases histamine. Histamine produces the symptoms associated with hayfever. Fexofenadine blocks the action of histamine, which reduces those symptoms.

Fexofenadine is described as a non-drowsy antihistamine. It is less likely to cause drowsiness than older antihistamines, though not everyone responds the same way.

Dosage

  • Adults and children aged 12 years and over: one tablet daily.
  • Take with water, before a meal.
  • Do not take more than one tablet in 24 hours.

The tablet begins to relieve symptoms within one hour and continues to work for 24 hours. If symptoms persist or worsen, stop taking it and speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Treathay 120mg is not suitable for children under 12 years of age.

Before taking Treathay

Speak to your pharmacist or doctor before taking Treathay if you are elderly, if you have kidney or liver problems, if you have or have had heart disease, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not take Treathay if you are allergic to fexofenadine or to any of the other ingredients listed below.

Taking other medicines

Antacids containing aluminium or magnesium can reduce the absorption of fexofenadine. Leave approximately two hours between taking Treathay and taking an antacid.

Tell your pharmacist about any other medicines you are taking, including those bought without a prescription.

Side effects

Side effects reported with fexofenadine include headache, drowsiness, dizziness and nausea.

Stop taking Treathay and seek medical help immediately if you experience swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, flushing or chest tightness. These may be signs of a serious allergic reaction.

For the full list of side effects, read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine. You can report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
